Danny Williams spent the whole of his playing career at Rotherham United making over 450 appearances. Following his retirement as a player, he stayed at the club, working as a coach before taking over as manager in 1962. In 1965 he joined Swindon Town as their manager and it was there, his managerial career peaked. In 1969 the club not only won promotion to the Second Division, but more sensationally they beat Arsenal in the League Cup final at Wembley.

That achievement was enough to suggest that he was the man to reverse Wednesday’ s decline and his appointment as manager in July 1969 was welcomed by almost all supporters. Unfortunately it was not to be the case, his activities in the transfer market left much to be desired, he described Eustace, Ford & Wilf Smith as the only good players at the club and promptly sold them. In his first season 1969-70, Wednesday were relegated and in 1970-71 they continued to struggle in the Second Division. He was sacked in January 1971.
